's roots lie in the prog-giants and old Metallica. This time the Metallica influences are dominating more than ever before. Train of Thought is heavy and harsh, the most bruising album to date. Memorable melodies' amount has been reduced and heavy stuff's increased. Prog is still there, though.
Their trash roots are very noticeable in the opening song, As I Am. Petrucci's solo in it is absurd Hammet-esque shredding and as James LaBrie imitates Hetfield's way of singing, the thing is clear.
If I remember right, This Dying Soul introduces distorted vocals for the first time in 's history. The song has Eastern atmosphere, which reminds me of Amorphis' Kebab-metal. Pantera and Metallica influences can be heard in the song. It also has a piano solo and a rap-part.
The album's little ballad-features are found in Endless Sacrifice and those alterante with nu-metal'ish riffage. Always identical pinch (harmonics?) at the end of a power chord line strenghten the nu-metal feeling. A long jazz-fusion solo spot leads to almost Motörhead-like straightness, only to change to pop'ish (in this album's scale) finale of the song which also has a thrash backing. Despite of the complexity, the song has similar empty despair as in -- guess who's -- Sanitarium.
Honor Thy Father starts with heavy trash stuff and the lyrics tell about a father who did his job badly. The song has prog parts and shades of rap-core and also the album's the most positive part, happily grooving melodic interlude. There's some movie samples at the end of the song bringing Awake'ish atmosphere. HTF's real hook is Labrie's Mike Patton-like performance at times! In its entirety (though messy such) HTF is the heaviest song on the record.
Vacant is a melancholic spacer featuring piano and cello, which darkens and soothes the listener for the most typical -- and also the best -- song on the album, instrumental Stream of Consciousness.
In the Name of God questions religions and asks does believing in greater forces demand always violence. Oriental atmosphere alternates with heavy riffage and hyper-active synth/guitar-cooing. Solo-changing are like an allergic had a matter of life and death and a bee inside his integral-helmet. The song's bombastic ending creates this heavy album a dramatic finale, where the band is at their best and leaves us to wait what they have for us the next time.
Generally: LaBrie sings lower and more non-melodically than earlier, making the album sound as heavy as it is. Towards the same goal works Petrucci with his heavy riffage and smaller amount of melodies plus Rudess who is more in a minor part on this album. There are some synth solos but not as much as before and JR's patches have been extended into darker direction; from hammonds to stoner-like buzzing. Portnoy plays the drums again like he was on a piecework pay and his playing is always interesting to analyze. If the man has always sounded like he was low on valium, now there's been some more steroids and speeds in his portion. There happens more behind the kit and the playing is also heavier/harder than before. JM's bass-work is as difficult to understand as before.
He also critiques that the album sounds a bit forced like Awake (I don't agree that Awake sounds forced but whatever..) and that although the transitions are pretty good, the heavy parts don't sound that well with the pop'ish and prog'ish parts. He says that he isn't impressed with 's arranging this time and that the songs might be too long. He says that the songs sound pretty messy, but he also says that the same problem bothers also FNM so fuck him.
